For the functionality of creating and maintaining permanent assigns, it might be beneficial to make use of the functionality already built into the Assign command.

Read in the Assign documentation about the FROM (and TO) arguments; you might just need a thin GUI layer around those.

@nbache

Yes, this idea is to simply build a GUI around the Assign commands and manipulation of the content in the startup files.
nbacheRe: Check out FROM argument of Assign20080713 23:21
@orgin

Yes, by my point is you don't even need to manipulate the startup files directly, you can just maintain a separate file and make one "Assign FROM <filename>" in the startup.

This is more tidy, more safe, and faster.

For added luxury, consider making it possible to maintain more than one file, e.g. one used for the early assigns in S-S and another for the later ones in U-S.

Best regards,

Niels

(P.S. Something's screwy here; if I use Preview, I lose the text. Also, I have to use a PC to post here; in IBrowse it seems I can log in, but not stay logged in long enough to get to the comments.)

@nbache

Ahh okey. Well even so the tool would still have to manage assigns set in the normal startup files. Since both the OS and most 3rd party programs use those.

(As for the website problems you are having, please use the message system here or pm me on amigans so that we don't get such traffic in the project comments. I'll do some extra checking with ibrowse tomorrow.)

@orgin

Can we make suggestion to SDK devs, that PROGDIR function will be added to programs automagically ? That way all new programs don't need assigns at all.

We have loads of old proggies with assigns, so tool is handy anyway.

Hello,

What does "high" mean? We urgently need such feature?
I don't think so. Don't misunderstand me, this idea is cool and we need such tool. But I'm sure there are more urgent things...
SZAMANAssignPrefs - possible starting point?20080714 22:23
http://os4depot.net/index.php?function=showfile&file=utility/workbench/assignprefs.lha - AssignPrefs, simple graphical tool for managing assigns, autor - Thomas Frieden and Joachim Birging.

Maybe is a good start point?

But please, don't discuss definitions here. Do it in the forums. Its better to talk about the project in project comments.
orginRe: AssignPrefs - possible starting point?20080714 22:44
@SZAMAN

Yes, whomever ends up as project manager for this project could check that link if there's anything that can be reused and also check if Thomas Frieden is okey with it from a licensing point of view.

This can pretty much be done with an overhaul of AssignPrefs on OS4Depot. C:Assign command already accepts a file containing a list of assigns to add.

All we need is the permission of the original author, which happens to be Thomas Frieden ;)

Edit: BAH!!! There were plenty of comments on this already...
